Sistani 'no need for surgery,' says his London office
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
London, Aug 11, IRNA -- Ayatollah Ali Sistani of Iraq is expected to continue medical consultations in London but has no need for coronary surgery, according to his office. In a statement issued late Tuesday, his office said that the eminent religious leader had undergone several investigations of his heart and coronary arteries since his sudden arrival in Britain last week for medical treatment. The investigations at a London hospital included a scan of the coronary arteries and an isotope scan before and after a treadmill test. "In the light of the results, his medical team has discounted the need for any coronary surgery," his office said, but added that the doctors have decided to continue with medical consultations and investigations to determine the necessary treatment." His London office told IRNA Wednesday that he was likely to stay in the UK for some time to continue tests. Speculation has been that Sistani`s sudden departure from Iraq was connected with the onset of a renewal battle by US forces in the holy city of Najaf. But any link was denied by head of his London office, Sayyed Javad Shahrestani, who told IRNA that the ayatollah had been sick for the last three weeks. HC/1432
