Pak opposition warns against sending forces to Iraq
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, July 29, IRNA - Parliamentary parties in Pakistan on Thursday condemned killing of two Pakistan nationals in Iraq and warned the government not to send troops to the war-shattered country, as it will be against the aspirations of the people. Speaking at a joint news conference here at the Parliament House, leaders of different opposition groups demanded the government to follow the example of India and Egypt and announce not to dispatch troops to the occupied Iraq. Alliance for Restoration of Democracy and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf leaders, including Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Imran Khan and Khawaja Saad Rafique questioned why the government was reluctant to say no to US request for troops. "Already, I don`t see any difference between Iraqi interim set-up and American government and if forces are sent to Iraq, it will mean massive reaction against us," Imran Khan cautioned. The government has said that no decision has been taken yet whether or not to contribute forces and in this connection the people and the Parliament would be taken into consideration. Opposition leaders said they would stage demonstrations in all the major cities against the government`s possible plan to commit troops for Iraq. Raja Ashraf maintained that the situation in Iraq would become more volatile if the government made a mistake to send its forces. "It is ironical that other countries are pulling out their forces and we are preparing to send ours," he remarked. MHA/TSH/1405/1420
