White House Report July 28: Iraq
United States Condemns Iraq Bombing
White House spokesman Trent Duffy July 28 condemned the car bombing of a police station in Baquba, Iraq, which was responsible for the deaths of 68 people.
"This attack on the Iraqi people is a terrible tragedy, and the U.S. condemns this attack in the strongest terms," said the spokesman said at a press briefing in Crawford, Texas.
Duffy promised that the bombing would not disrupt attempts to bring democracy to the region and said that the attack "underscores why the Iraqi people, with the help of the world, must and will prevail over terrorism."
"Despite this violence, it's clear that the Iraqi people are seizing this historic opportunity to create a more peaceful, prosperous and democratic society," he said, adding that the Iraqi army and police force are steadily improving their own security.
According to news reports, the attack, which wounded many Iraqis waiting outside a recruiting center, came three days before Iraq is scheduled to convene a national conference that will choose an interim national assembly.
