Russia Reaffirms Position on Troops in Iraq
VOA News

Russia's Foreign Ministry has again said it will not send troops to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Spokesman Alexander Yakovenko made the statement Tuesday in response to a report that Moscow had agreed in principle to send 40,000 troops to Iraq.

The spokesman categorically denied the report about Russian deployment by Stratfor, a private U.S. firm that forecasts economic and security issues.

Mr. Yakovenko told reporters that officials are not considering sending troops to Iraq or Afghanistan, even for promises of economic incentives, as the report said.

Russia joined France and Germany in strongly opposing the war in Iraq before U.S.-led invasion.
