Iraq, Syria Reach Deal on Border Security
VOA News

Iraq says it has reached agreement with Syria to seal their 600-kilometer common border, in a move aimed at stopping foreign fighters from entering Iraq.

Speaking in Damascus, visiting Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh said the agreement calls for specialized security forces from both countries to cooperate in stemming the flow of foreign militants.

Syria has denied charges it allows foreign fighters to cross into Iraq to fight U.S.-led coalition forces. But Damascus also has said it cannot patrol the rugged border frontier alone.

Meanwhile, U.S. military officials say a coalition soldier, an Iraqi civilian and an insurgent were killed today during an attack near Mosul in northern Iraq.

In other developments Sunday, the Philippines has repeated that its troops will not be evacuated before August 20th from Iraq as demanded by militants holding a Philippine hostage.
