Officials in Iraq are reporting a rupture in a southern oil pipeline, but it is unclear if it is an act of sabotage.
British military sources report the breach in one of Iraq's two main southern pipelines Saturday, but say there is no suspicion of sabotage. However, other reports suggest guerrillas set the pipeline on fire about 10 kilometers south of the town of Zubyr. British troops are investigating.
Reports also conflict about the effect on oil production of the break in the 106 centimeter diameter pipeline. The Associated Press says oil flow has not been affected, but other reports say hourly oil output has been cut in half.
Coalition troops and Iraqi forces have been on alert for attacks aimed at disrupting Iraq's interim government after Monday's transfer of sovereignty from the U.S.-led coalition.
