Al-Bayyna Warns Neigbouring Countries against Interference in Iraq's Affairs

(Al-Bayyna is a weekly paper issued by the Hezbollah movement in Iraq, 25 July, 2004)- From editorial]: "We have a clear warning for neighbouring countries: Beware playing with Iraq's domestic security and stability, and stop trading in Iraqi blood, for your evil plots are due to boomerang. We would also like to urge them to be honest enough to put into practice the letter of the final communique they issued in Cairo without trying to sell us honey mixed with poison. They must understand that we, Iraqis, have taken an irrevocable decision to launch a relentless counter attack on terrorism and shall never let out until we have wiped it all out and defeated the forces of evil sustaining it out of the grudge they bear our country and our countrymen."

Al-Nahdah: Iraqi Shi'is are not Iran's Loyal Puppets

(Al-Nahdhah, Baghdad, by Independent Democrats Movement, 25 July, 2004)- [From commentary by Safi al-Yasiri]: "Mr Rafsanjani, a key figure in the Iranian regime, says that Iran is capable of aggravating the crisis in Iraq whenever it chooses. This shows the extent to which Mr Rafsanjani and some other Iranian officials are still being deluded by the false assumption that the Shi'is of Iraq are their loyal puppets who will always be there as a handy card for them to play at will. This probably explains why they offered to send a delegation to help defuse tension at the peak of the standoff in Al-Najaf. What they seem to have forgotten, however, is that their delegation was turned down by every single cleric and notable in Al-Najaf, a frustrating rebuff that was, at the same time, a very clear message to the effect that, for Iraqi Shi'is, national allegiance has priority over sectarian allegiance."

Al-Mada: Arabs and America's Faces

(Al-Mada is issued daily by Al-Mada institution for Media, Culture, and Arts, 25 July, 2004)- [From commentary by Shakir al-Nabulsi]: "Why is it that, when it comes to America, Arabs normally fail to see anything except what some of them would describe as an ugly face? Isn't it a fantastically unique paradox that Arab viewers should watch such Arabic satellite TV programmes as 'Star Academy' or 'Super Star', featuring young men and women joyfully singing and dancing in praise of love and life, when others tune in to other channels to watch footage of masked 'contractors', mercenaries who make a living out of kidnapping and decapitating innocent people, criminals who have no qualms about advertising their heinous trade on TV, only to disappear again into the darkness of the bleakest recesses of the Arab world, where sowing death and destruction is considered a virtue?"

Al-Sharq Al-Awsat: ``You are well as long as your neighbour is''

(Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, London-based, Baghdad edition independent daily, Saudi-owned, 25 July, 2004)- From commentary by Iyad Abu-Shaqrah]: "We have a wonderful old popular saying, which goes: 'You are well as long as your neighbour is.' It is really unfortunate that the humanistic philosophy implied in simple saying is beyond those who are incapable of conceiving of politics except as coercion, those who see cohabitation as repression, cultural interaction as imposition and for whom the only possible form of dialogue is the dialogue of the deaf."
