Germany backs down on specific exit date for foreign troops in Iraq
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, June 4, IRNA -- The German government appeared to back down from a demand for a specific date for the withdrawal of US-led multinational forces from Iraq. German Foreign Ministry spokesman Walter Lindner told IRNA "further discussions" on a new Iraq resolution were continuing. "There is still a need for more discussions," the official said. Lindner`s latest stance contradicted Wednesday`s remarks by German UN Ambassador Gunter Pleuger who was quoted as saying in New York that such an exit deadline would set an "important signal" to the world of Washington`s serious intention to respect sovereignty in Iraq. Berlin has repeatedly called for a "real transfer of sovereignty" to the Iraqi people which includes the withdrawal of all foreign troops and Iraq`s total access to its own resources like oil and gas.
