  • IRAQ WRAP VOA 30 Jun 2004 -- Iraq's interim government has taken legal custody of Saddam Hussein. Correspondent Nick Simeone tells us although he still remains physically in the hands of American troops, the former Iraqi dictator is no longer considered a prisoner of war but now a criminal defendant preparing to face war crimes charges.
  • SADDAM/LEGAL ISSUES VOA 30 Jun 2004 -- Independent lawyers in the Middle East, including lawyers who work for Saddam Hussein, say they are worried about the fairness of any trial under the present interim Iraqi government. They say the trial should be postponed until an elected government is in place in Baghdad.
  • Iraq: Handover -- Baghdad Can't Expect Much Outside Help Until Security Is Under Control (Part 4) RFE/RL 30 Jun 2004 -- Iraq has been granted its sovereignty from the United States; but will the world be rushing to help Baghdad? Probably not, while the security situation remains so grave. The likelihood of new foreign-troop commitments is slim, and reconstruction and economic activity cannot progress meaningfully without a secure environment.
  • Iraq: Authorities In Baghdad Take Legal Custody of Saddam Hussein RFE/RL 30 Jun 2004 -- Just two days after Iraq's interim government took power in Baghdad, U.S. forces have handed over former President Saddam Hussein to the legal custody of the new authorities. Transferred along with Hussein today were 11 senior figures from his government, which was ousted by U.S.-led forces more than a year ago. Among them are former Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz and Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as "Chemical Ali" for his role in chemical weapons attacks. Hussein is expected to face a wide range of charges in court tomorrow.
  • IRAQ / SADDAM VOA 30 Jun 2004 -- Iraq on Wednesday officially took legal custody of former dictator Saddam Hussein along with 11 of his top lieutenants. VOA's Greg LaMotte reports from Baghdad most Iraqis say they are happy Saddam will face legal proceedings.
  • Saddam Hussein Appears In Iraqi Court RFE/RL 30 Jun 2004 -- Deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein appeared in a Baghdad court today, just hours after he and 11 members of his former government were transferred to the legal custody of Iraq's new interim government.

The country is riven by religious factionalism and political divisions, between those who supported the former regime and their opponents.

  • IRAQ: Bitter-sweet reaction to handover in north IRIN 30 Jun 2004 -- The psychiatrist and vice-chancellor of the university in the Iraqi Kurdish city of Sulaymaniyah well remembers the day when Kurdish irregulars, backed by US troops, flooded south to take control of Kirkuk and Mosul. "It wasn't just the overthrow of the Baathist regime that overjoyed us," he told IRIN. "It was the knowledge that once again all of Iraq was ours - the territories controlled by the Kurds after 1991 were a claustrophobic place."
