- U.S.: Bush Challenged By Opposition Democrats On Prison-Abuse Scandal RFE/RL 24 Jun 2004 -- The U.S. administration is working hard to counter concerns about American soldiers and contract workers abusing or possibly torturing prisoners at U.S.-run detention facilities. This week, for example, it released documents indicating that President George W. Bush personally insisted that prisoners be treated humanely, even if they are not covered by international laws of war. But that is not enough for Bush's opponents in Congress, who hope to create an independent committee to investigate the scandal.

- Iraq: Kurds Still Hopeful Autonomy Claims Will Be Respected RFE/RL 24 Jun 2004 -- For Iraqi Kurds, one question remains more important than any other: will their goal of political autonomy be realized in a new federal Iraq? Their hopes were dealt a blow earlier this month when a United Nations resolution failed to address the Kurdish issue, but Kurds remain optimistic that negotiations with Iraq's new interim government will bear fruit.

- BRITAIN / IRAQ VOA 24 Jun 2004 -- Britain has condemned the latest wave of terrorist bombings in Iraq, but says the hand-over of power next week to an Iraqi interim government will not be affected.
- SOKOR/IRAQ PROTESTS VOA 24 Jun 2004 -- South Korea's government faces growing protests over its handling of the kidnapping of a young Korean civilian in Iraq, who was later beheaded by his captors. Protesters are demanding the government pull its troops out of Iraq, and cancel plans to send more soldiers to help U.S.-led efforts to rebuild the country.
