  • Iraq: After Stormy Year, UN Assumes Central Role RFE/Rl 21 Jun 2004 -- Overlooked in Iraq's transfer of sovereignty process is the handoff of considerable responsibility to the United Nations after 1 July. The UN Security Council has designated the secretariat to assume key nation-building duties similar to its recent efforts in the Balkans and Afghanistan. It marks a major turnaround after a wrenching period for the UN in Iraq.

  • SOUTH KOREA TROOPS/IRAQ HOSTAGE VOA 21 Jun 2004 -- South Korea is dispatching a six-member delegation to the Middle East in an attempt to gain the release of one its nationals kidnapped in Iraq. Bu the South Korean government says the kidnapping will not deter it from its plan to send additional troops to Iraq.
  • Seoul To Send Troops To Iraq Despite Threats RFE/RL 21 Jun 2004 -- South Korea says it will go forward with its plans to send some 3,000 additional troops to Iraq, despite a threat from Iraqi militants to execute a South Korean hostage.

  • PENTAGON/FALLUJAH VOA 21 Jun 2004 -- Senior U.S. commanders say they are optimistic about developments in Fallujah, the troubled Iraqi city west of Baghdad widely regarded as a stronghold for anti-coalition insurgents, including foreign fighters. Yet none of the coalition's top objectives for restoring order in Fallujah have been met and some western security experts claim conditions there are deteriorating.
