United Nations

  • Iraq: UN Weapons Monitors Await Role From Security Council RFE/RL 09 Jun 2004 -- Among the issues that are not resolved in the UN Security Council resolution restoring Iraq's sovereignty is the fate of the weapons inspection team known as UNMOVIC. The team is still technically charged with verifying the elimination of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, but has been sidelined since U.S.-led coalition forces toppled Saddam Hussein. Some council members want the group to return to Iraq and use their expertise to form a permanent weapons inspectorate. U.S. and new Iraqi leaders say it is too soon to decide on the UN inspection role.
  • UN: Security Council Resolution Boosts Iraq's Reassertion Of Sovereignty RFE/RL 09 Jun 2004 -- The UN Security Council has given its unanimous support to the upcoming transfer of sovereignty to Iraq's caretaker government.   • G8 Iraq Debt VOA 09 Jun 2004 -- The Group of Eight summit in Sea Island, Georgia Wednesday launched a Partnership for Progress in the Broader Middle East and North Africa. While the initiative says debt reduction is critical for Iraq the summit deferred action on the Iraq debt.
  • Iraq: Will A Sovereign Government Help To Quell The Insurgency? RFE/RL 09 Jun 2004 -- The United Nations has unanimously approved a resolution endorsing the upcoming U.S. handover of power to a sovereign Iraqi government. But will the transfer of sovereignty help to quell Iraqi insurgencies?

  • E.U./IRAQ VOA 09 Jun 2004 -- The European Union says it will progressively increase its involvement in Iraq's reconstruction if the country manages to achieve stability and move toward a representative democracy in the months ahead. The 25-nation bloc released a strategy paper outlining how it proposes to help the war-torn nation.
  • BRITAIN/IRAQ VOA 09 Jun 2004 -- British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has applauded the unanimous adoption of the U.N. Security Council resolution on Iraq Tuesday.
