Now there's a new asset in theatre ready to support the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

  • U.S., Iraq Pledge Cooperation On Military Operations RFE/RL 07 Jun 2004 -- Reports from United Nations headquarters in New York say the incoming Iraqi government and the United States have agreed on a way to regulate the use of military forces inside Iraq.
  • IRAQ/WRAP VOA 07 Jun 2004 -- U.S. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice says a U.N. resolution endorsing the handover of sovereignty in Iraq could be approved in the next few days. And Iraq's newly named prime minister says nine militias have agreed to disband as part of an effort to curb insurgent violence.

United Nations

  • U.N./IRAQ RESOLUTION VOA 07 Jun 2004 -- The United States and Britain have submitted a fourth draft of a Security Council resolution on Iraq, and asked for a vote on Tuesday. Several minor revisions appear to have won over the last few holdouts, paving the way for unanimous approval of the measure.
  • U.N./IRAQ/BRAHIMI VOA 07 Jun 2004 -- The U.N. special envoy to Iraq, Lakhdar Brahimi, says that to be credible, Iraq's interim government must been seen as independent from foreign forces. Mr. Brahimi also called for the prompt release of many detainees being held in Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison.
  • Support must continue during Iraq's political transition, Security Council told UN News Centre 07 Jun 2004 -- With the Security Council poised to act soon on a draft resolution on Iraq, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his Special Adviser Lakhdar Brahimi today urged the international community to continue support for the county, and its new interim government, as it deals with challenges during "a new phase of the political process" - the return of sovereignty on 30 June.
  • U.S., U.K. To Present UN Iraq Resolution RFE/RL 07 Jun 2004 -- The United States and United Kingdom are today due to give the UN Security Council the latest draft of a UN resolution on Iraq endorsing the handover of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government.

  • Most Iraqi Militias Set for Disbandment, Reintegration AFPS 07 Jun 2004 -- Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi today announced an agreement that calls for most of Iraq's independent militias to reintegrate or disband.
  • Transition, Reintegration of Iraq Militias Launched Washington File 07 Jun 2004 -- The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Baghdad announced an agreement June 7 designed to integrate militias and armed forces that have existed outside Iraqi state control.
  • IRAQ / MILITIAS VOA 07 Jun 2004 -- Iraq's new interim prime minister, Iyad Allawi, says his government has reached a deal to disband nearly all the militia groups in Iraq by early next year.The rebel al-Sadr militia is not one of those who agreed to disband.
  • IRAQ: Ration cards to be basis for electoral register, says UN official IRIN 07 Jun 2004 -- It is likely that food ration cards issued under the now closed UN-administered Oil-for-Food programme will be used to create a voters' roll in the elections scheduled for January 2005, a UN election official has said.
  • IRAQ: Focus on creating a culture of human rights IRIN 07 Jun 2004 -- Iraq's new human rights minister welcomed a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), calling for independent monitoring, but said much more needed to be done in order to protect human rights.

Foreign Reactions

  • BRITAIN / IRAQ VOA 07 Jun 2004 -- Britain's foreign secretary predicted Monday that the United Nations Security Council will soon pass a new resolution outlining the role of the Iraqi interim government that will take power in the country on July first. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw also told members of parliament that security will remain the largest problem facing the country after that date.
  • RUSSIA/IRAQ VOA 07 Jun 2004 -- Russia's deputy foreign minister, Yuri Fedotov, has noted improvements in the latest U.N. draft resolution on Iraq following intensive weekend consultations. But he says Russia still feels the draft needs more refining during further talks at U.N. headquarters in New York.

  • Parts of Iraqi missiles discovered in Dutch scrapyard - UN report UN News Centre 07 Jun 2004 -- Engines of two surface-to-air missiles from Iraq have turned up at a scrapyard in the Netherlands, according to a new report by the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), tasked by the Security Council to probe the country's illicit arms programme.
