Military occupation of Iraq, biggest US mistake: Safavi
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, May 23, IRNA -- Commander of the Islamic Revolution`s Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Yahya Rahim Safavi said here Sunday the military occupation of Iraq has been the biggest mistake made by Washington. He told reporters that the US adopted a unilateral policy regarding occupation of Iraq and that was why its policy was not supported by other world countries. The US authorities are not willing to share reconstruction process of the war-torn Iraq with European countries, he said adding that Washington is trying to hand over all Iraqi oil resources and reconstruction projects to American and British companies. With its high daily production capacity, Iraq can disturb the balance of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) once it enters the world oil market, he said. He further predicted that the US state department will take charge of the Iraqi affairs instead of the Pentagon in the near future. Referring to failure of the US forces in establishing security in the war-hit Iraq, he said, on the average, five Americans are killed each day in Iraq. Over 1,000 US forces have been killed in that country during the past one month, he added. Condemning sacrilege on holy Muslim sites in Iraq, Brigadier General Safavi said Shia Muslims particularly those in Iraq are annoyed by the US attack on the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf. "We believe that the US forces have faced a military defeat. They have no way other than withdrawing from Najaf and the entire Iraq, otherwise another Vietnam will be created for them," Safavi concluded. 217/213
