Koizumi's envoy seeks Iran cooperation in Iraq`s reconstruction
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, May 12, Kyodo/OANA/IRNA -- Former Japanese foreign minister Masahiko Komura, who is visiting Iran as Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi`s special envoy, on Tuesday sought Iran`s cooperation in the reconstruction of Iraq ahead of the planned transfer of power to the Iraqis in June, Japanese officials said. Komura made the request to Iranian President Mohammad Khatami during their talks in Tehran, and handed him Koizumi`s letter to that end, the officials said. Komura urged Iran, which has some influence over the Shiite Muslims in Iraq, to play a constructive role toward ensuring security in the war-devastated country, the officials said. The two agreed that the United Nations must play a key role in the Iraqi election which is to be held after the handover of power, according to the officials. Komura and Khatami, moreover, expressed their support for the proposal of Lakhdar Brahimi, UN special envoy to Iraq, on the establishment of an interim government for Iraq, they said. Brahimi recently called on the United Nations Security Council to aid Iraqis in establishing a new "caretaker government" that could be formed by the end of May. The US-led occupation is to hand over sovereignty to the Iraqis on June 30. /LS/210
