Speaker stresses Iran`s impartial policy in Iraq

Beirut, April 22, IRNA -- Speaker of Iran`s Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis) Mehdi Karroubi here Wednesday evening stressed Tehran`s impartial policy toward Iraq. Addressing a dinner banquet hosted by President of the Lebanese National Assembly Nabih Berri, he called for establishment of security and stability in the war-torn Iraq. Urging the occupying forces to leave Iraq, he stressed that the Iraqi nation who lived several decades under the dictatorship of Saddam cannot tolerate the presence of foreign forces in the country. Tehran, in such a sensitive situation of the Mideast region, mphasizes on its transparent policy based on expansion of cooperation with all the regional countries in general and with Lebanon and Syria in particular, in different areas, Karroubi reiterated. Referring to Lebanon as symbol of coexistence of various tribes, groups and minorities in the Middle East, he called for further promotion of Tehran-Beirut cooperation in all fields. Meanwhile, a letter of understanding on expansion of bilateral parliamentary relations was inked by the two sides. Stressing the lasting and friendly relations between the two countries, the letter of understanding underlined the importance of parliaments in promotion of all-out cooperation between the two nations. The two speakers also called for participation of the private sectors in carrying out different development projects. Promotion of Tehran-Beirut economic, trade, and technical cooperation was also underscored by the accord. Condemning threats against Syria and Lebanon, the two speakers called for an end to occupation of the Palestinian territories and the Zionist invasion as well as establishment of an independent Palestinian government with the holy Qods as its capital. In related developments, Karroubi met and conferred with Secretary General of the Hizbullah, Seyed Hassan Narullah, here Wednesday afternoon. The latest regional developments, including the critical situation in Iraq and in the occupied Palestine were discussed by the two officials. The Iranian speaker expressed hope that the existing problems facing Muslims throughout the world will be settled through close cooperation among all the Islamic states. Karroubi, heading a high-ranking political and parliamentary delegation, arrived here Wednesday on an official three-day visit to discuss with senior Lebanese officials bilateral relations, the Palestinian and Iraqi crises as well as regional developments. Karroubi wrapped up his three-day visit to Syria on Wednesday. During his stay in Damascus, the speaker held meetings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his counterpart Mahmoud al-Abrash as well as members of Syria`s National Assembly. 217/213 End
