IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, April 19, IRNA -- Pakistan hinted on Monday to send troops to Iraq under UN mandate. "If there is any troops contribution by Pakistan, it would be strictly under UN mandate and serve under UN command," Foreign Office spokesman Masood Khan told weekly press briefing. Pakistan said last week that Washington has formally requested Islamabad for troops for Iraq. "Pakistan is fully aware of the situation in Iraq and it will eliberate on this issue and its response would be in conformity with the policy of the government reflecting aspirations of the people," Khan added. To a question, the spokesman said Pakistan will be President of the UN Security Council next month. "It would be playing a constructive role at the UN for ushering in era of peace and security in Iraq." Asked if Pakistan has received any response from New Delhi about its proposals for checking drug trafficking and nuclear Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), Khan said there has so far been no feedback from India. "Pakistan has made the proposals and is awaiting response." To another question, Foreign Office spokesman said the government is pursuing the political track to resolve the issue of the surrender of Taleban al-Qaeda men and their local supporters in the country`s tribal region. "Steps being taken are part of the political process," Khan said, "The government wants to exhaust all options and is not contemplating action at the moment." TK/TSH/214 End
