TAIWAN WILLING TO HELP REBUILD IRAQ: MOFA

Taipei, April 19 (CNA) Taiwan is very willing to take part in the reconstruction program led by the United States in Iraq as part of its efforts to assist in rebuilding a democratic Iraq, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesman Richard Shih said Monday.
Shih made the remarks in response to an invitation from the American Institute in Taiwan that welcomes Taiwan-based companies to take part in a seminar sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce April 28 in Seoul to seek cooperative opportunities as subcontractors with four main contractors based in the United States -- Lucent Technologies, Louis Berger, Parsons and Flour-AMEC.
Although there are only 28 placements for companies headquartered in Taiwan to attend the Seoul seminar, Shih pointed out that many domestic firms have shown keen interest in presenting themselves.
Taiwan appreciates the goodwill gesture made by the United States and will be very happy to see Taiwan companies participate in Iraq's reconstruction, Shih said, adding that Taiwan is determined to gain a presence in the task along with other countries as part of its support for the global anti-terrorism campaign.
According to the MOFA spokesman, only 63 countries -- those which backed the attacks initiated by the United States on Iraq last year -- will be offered the opportunity to take part in the reconstruction program.
