German elite anti-terror force to stay in Iraq despite agents` death

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, April 14, IRNA -- Germany`s elite anti-terror force GSG-9 is
to remain in Iraq despite the death of two of its agents who were
killed last week during an attack on their convoy near the town of
Fallujah, the daily Frankfurter Rundschau reported Wednesday.
As long as Germany has an embassy in Baghdad, GSG-9 forces have
to protect the diplomatic personnel, German government circles were
quoted as saying.
Between 5-10 counter-terror troopers are currently guarding three
German diplomats at the embassy in the Iraqi capital, according to
a report in the Bild newspaper.
The GSG-9 anti-terror force has been in Iraq since November 2003,
however, the German government has been tight-lipped about the
security agents` presence in the war-stricken country.
Berlin has also yet to confirm the death of two GSG-9 troopers,
ages 25 and 38, who were shot dead last week after their convoy was
ambushed on the Amman-Baghdad highway.
