Singapore, March 12 (CNA) Singapore intercepted several shipments linked to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) late last year, Foreign Minister S. Jayakumar revealed in Parliament Thursday while explaining why Singapore supported the U.S.-led war In Iraq.
The seizures at port included ingredients for chemical weapons and materials for building missile warheads. Several companies have been prosecuted for breaking export control laws.
Jayakumar said the threat posed by such weapons is of real concern to small densely-populated countries like Singapore. And furthermore, the war in Iraq has already had positive spin-offs, he added.
Iran is now cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Libya has come clean and given up its WMD program, and North Korea has gone back to six-party talks over its nuclear program, he explained. "All these developments make the world and our region safer," the minister said.
