Georgia to send second contingent of soldiers to Iraq in March

PLA Daily 2004-03-01

MOSCOW, Feb. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Georgia will send 155 soldiers to Iraq on March 2 to continue the mission as part of the US-led coalition force there, the Interfax news agency reported on Sunday.

The contingent will be sent to replace Georgia's first batch of troops whose six-month mission in Iraq has finished, a Georgian General Staff spokesman said.

The new unit had been scheduled to fly to Iraq in early February, but was delayed due to financial and technical problems, including a lack of equipment, the spokesman said.

He confirmed that "all of these problems have been settled now" and Georgia will send another unit of 60 to Iraq in one month, bringing the number of Georgian soldiers to 215 as planned.

Georgia joined the international mission in Iraq last August. The 70-strong contingent, including medical personnel, sappers and policemen, is based outside the city of Tikrit in Iraq.
