Opposition to Iraq war "greatest danger" to Blair`s reelection
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
London, Feb 24, IRNA -- Half of the members of Britain`s ruling Labour Party believe that opposition to the Iraq war is the "greatest danger" to Prime Minister Tony Blair`s government winning the next general election, according to a new poll. Another 41 percent suggest that the greatest risk to losing the election, which is expected to be held next year, is from Blair`s continued support for the war. The poll, published in The Guardian newspaper Tuesday, found that Labour Party members were divided over Blair`s future, with two- thirds suggesting he should stand down as prime minister either immediately or before the next election. More than a third said that they preferred to see Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown take over from Blair, whose personal net ratings were from minus 15 to minus 21 points in the past month. In an interview with the News of the World over the weekend, the prime minister insisted that he had no intention of stepping down from power before the next election. The poll showed a rise in opposition to the Iraq war among Labour members to 45 percent despite last month`s publication of the Hutton report into the death of arms inspector David Kelly. A third said that the report, which vindicated the government, was a "whitewash". HC/LS/210 End
