Continuing UN fact-finding mission in Iraq, Brahimi meets officials and activists

11 February 2004 Lakhdar Brahimi, who is leading a United Nations team assessing the feasibility of early elections in Iraq, held meetings today with a number of officials as well as representatives of civic groups.

This morning, Mr. Brahimi met with two members of the Iraqi Governing Council, Ghazy al Yawar and Younadem Kena, according to a UN spokesman.

Mr. Brahimi later held discussions with a large group of lawyers, human rights activists and jurists. That meeting was followed by talks with three members of the Shiite al Dawa party, which is also represented on the Governing Council.

Also on his schedule were contacts with a cross-section of Iraqi society, including academics and intellectuals.
