PLA Daily 2004-02-09

MADRID, Feb. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Spain may transfer its 1,300 soldiers based in Iraq to the Polish-led multinational division inIraq, Spanish media reported Friday.

Spanish Government Commissioner for the Reconstruction of Iraq Fernando Diez Moreno, said Spanish troops, at present in the 2,500-strong Plus Ultra II brigade, could be transferred to the Center-South Multinational Division on June 30.

Diaz Moreno also said that if this happened, Spain or the NorthAtlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) would take command of this contingent. Poland did not seem willing to extend its leadership of the division, he added.

The Spanish-led Plus Ultra brigade, whose mission is divided into security and humanitarian actions, also includes soldiers from El Salvador, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.
