Berlin, Feb 9, IRNA -- A leading United States senator called for the deployment of NATO troops in Iraq, hoping to finally restore peace and stability in the war-stricken country. "We should build on the success of the NATO mission in Afghanistan by expanding NATO`s role in Iraq," Republican Senator from Arizona John McCain said in his speech to the 40th Munich Security Conference on Sunday. "NATO command of the southern third of Iraq would decisively put to rest lingering charges of alliance divisions over Iraq and bring to bear every alliance member`s capabilities to support Iraq`s democratic future," he added. More than 250 political leaders and security experts attended the two-day Munich Security Conference which ended its work on Sunday afternoon. The controversial military and security conference focused on the state of transatlantic ties, NATO and the future of Middle East. 2051/210 End
