Germany open-minded towards Int`l Iraq rebuilding conference
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Jan 26, IRNA -- The German government said Monday it was open-minded towards a French and Russian proposal for an international conference on Iraq`s political and economic reconstruction. Addressing reporters, German deputy foreign ministry spokesman Jens Ploetner was quoted as saying that his country would "approach constructively" the French and Russian idea. He added that the topic would also be discussed in the United Nations Security Council. Berlin interprets the French-Russian proposal as such that a date for such a conference would only be fixed after the transfer of Iraqi sovereignty, according to Ploetner. Germany has repeatedly called for the UN`s "central political role" in Iraq`s rebuilding process as well as a clear timetable for the transfer of power from the American occupiers to the Iraqi people. The US has been reluctant to give the UN more than a minimal authority in Iraq`s post-war reconstruction process. 2051/212 End
