UK`s Greenstock and Kharrazi discuss Iraq developments

Tehran, Jan 5, IRNA -- United Kingdom`s special representative for 
Iraq, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, discussed the `latest Iraq developments` 
with Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi here Monday, foreign 
ministry said in a press release. 
"In the meeting, Mr. Kharrazi stressed on guaranteeing security, 
stability and peace in Iraq and establishing an elected Iraqi 
government as well as ending the country`s occupation as soon as 
possible," it said. 
"The Islamic Republic of Iran, he said, calls for a full transfer 
of power to the elected representatives of the Iraqi people," the 
foreign ministry`s press bureau added. 
According to the office, the Iranian foreign minister also 
reiterated Tehran`s stress on the pivotal role of the United Nations 
in Iraq developments as well as Iran`s determination to use `all its 
resources and means to maintain justice and stability in the region`. 
The UK representative for Iraq emphasized his respective 
government`s will to continue dialogue and cooperation with Iran and 
described Tehran`s role regarding developments in Iraq and the 
region as decisive. 
He also called for continued exchange of views with Iran on Iraq 
as well as other important regional and international issues, it 
added. 
Greenstock arrived in Tehran Monday for a one-day visit to hold 
bilateral talks on Iraq with Iranian officials. 
According to a British embassy press release here, the official 
was expected to "discuss a broad range of issues including the role of
Iran in the reconstruction of Iraq, border issues, Iranian pilgrims 
crossing the border to visit Najaf and Karbala, and the political 
process" in the war-torn country. 
"Iran has a strong interest in ensuring a peaceful and stable 
future for Iraq and can make significant contributions to the 
reconstruction effort," the embassy cited Greenstock as saying. 
The visit is part of ongoing dialogue about Iraq between the 
Islamic Republic and the United Kingdom. 
The visit follows that by the former special envoy to Iraq, John 
Sawers, who travelled to Tehran in July 2003. 
Jeremy Greenstock, previously UK ambassador to the United 
Nations, was appointed UK special representative to Iraq on September 
12, 2003.
