CPA Awards Contracts for Community Projects in Diwaniyah, Iraq

Contracts are funded by Saddam Hussein's seized assets

The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) has announced that it has awarded about $1.6 million in contracts for community projects in the region of Diwaniyah, Iraq.

Two CPA press releases dated January 2 said the contracts are part of a larger initiative to help Iraqis move forward toward democracy and a sovereign government and that additional projects will be announced in the coming weeks.

The press releases said that assets seized from the toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein are the source of funding for the contracts.

DISTRIBUTIONS MADE TO AD-DIWANIYAH FOR AREA PROJECTS

Diwaniyah, Iraq. The Coalition Provisional Authority awarded almost $1.6 million (3 billion Iraqi Dinars *) in contracts for community projects in Ad-Diwaniyah today. The projects will employ local people.

The money will provide repairs to the following: a chicken farm, internet café for health centers, Refaat Sewage Network, eight banks, and the police headquarters building. It will assist with fuel and electricity issues by repairing the central fuel station, 33KV towers, an electrical warehouse, and four electrical substations.

CPA believes a good educational system is essential as Iraq progresses toward self-government. The funds will repair and rebuild schools in the following areas: five in Hamza, four in Afak, three in Ghamas, five in Al Sadar, as well as the Al Rajaa Handicapped Institute. Repairing and improving schools creates a better learning environment for children and increases opportunities for their futures as they learn in a free Iraq.

The local Iraqi contractors were chosen from a competitive bidding process. All the money is given in increments, and as the work is properly completed, more money will be given to the Iraqi contractors. Seized from the former regime assets, the money is now being used for the Iraqi people.

During the summer, CPA gave $528,000 (1 billion Iraqi Dinars *) to 1056 schools in the province -- each school received $500 (950,000 Iraqi Dinars *). Since October, CPA has awarded almost $4 million (7.6 billion Iraqi Dinars*) for other community projects in Ad-Diwaniyah. Assisting the people in Ad-Diwaniyah is an important goal for the Coalition Provisional Authority. It is part of a larger initiative to help Iraqis as they move toward democracy and a sovereign government. Additional funding projects will be announced in the coming weeks.

* Assuming $1 equal 1,900 Iraqi Dinars.
