$100M, 90M EUROS RECOVERED
BAGHDAD, Iraq--One hundred million U.S. dollars, and almost 90 million Euro's, have been recovered from Baghdad in the area secured by the 4/64 Armour, 2nd Bde, 3rd Infantry Division.
According to 3rd ID Provost Marshal, the funds were discovered between April 23 and 26.
The unit found a total of 31 containers, which were flown from Baghdad International Airport on Sunday, 27 April, under security escort of members of a finance unit, Military Police, and Criminal Investigations Division. The money arrived at a secure location for counting purposes at approximately 10:30 am that morning.
Soldiers of the unit in charge of the counting took approximately five hours to finish this count. The funds were secured by the command.
Previously, more than $650 million in U.S. currency, was discovered in the same area, and is also secured in an undisclosed location. Funds will remain secure until a stable government is established in Iraq and will ultimately be returned to the Iraqis to assist in the re-building of their nation.
