CIVIL AFFAIRS SOLDIER INJURED IN BAGHDAD
Baghdad, Iraq -- A U.S. soldier assigned to the Coalition Land Forces Component Command Headquarters was shot and wounded by an unknown assailant while traveling in downtown Baghdad at approximately 1 p.m. (6 a.m. EDT) today.
The soldier was on a civil affairs mission in a convoy of vehicles traveling to the Palestine Hotel at the time of the incident. No fire was returned because Coalition forces could not positively identify the source of the fire.
The soldier was evacuated to a field hospital for treatment of his injury, which was not life threatening. His name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
The incident follows a similar incident last Sunday in which four U.S. civil affairs soldiers were injured while on a public health-related mission in downtown Baghdad after being ambushed by an assailant who approached their vehicles while they were stopped in traffic. All of those soldiers are in stable condition at a field hospital.
Coalition efforts to defeat regime pockets of resistance are proving successful, however, this incident again reaffirms not only that dangers still exist to Coalition Forces and the Iraqi people, but also that Coalition forces only engage threats they can identify in order to minimize the risk of collateral damage.
