TASK FORCE TARAWA BEGINS PATROLS NEAR IRANIAN BORDER
AL KUT, IRAQ - Marines from the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion attached to Task Force Tarawa (TFT) began border-screening patrols in northeastern Iraq Monday.
The patrols were designed to maintain Iraqi territorial integrity and will simultaneously assist Iraqi ex-patriots to return home to their loved ones as well.
The Marines will search and interview all people attempting to enter and leave Iraq through Iran. Prepared to detain all former regime officials, third-country nationals and insurgents, Marines are authorized to seize contraband such as weapons, antiquities and large sums of money from people attempting to remove them from Iraq.
The patrols will not be static at any one point. "We have a large area to cover," said Maj. Steve Greco, 4th LAR Liaison Officer to TFT. "We plan to screen the full length of the Wasit Province Iran border," he added.
Medical teams are attached to the battalion to provide assistance.
"We have discovered that people often bring their sick and their injured to us," said Greco.
