MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR(April 4, 2003) -- The United States Senate unanimously passed a bill recently, commending the President and armed forces and expressing the gratitude of the senate for not only the efforts and sacrifices of military troops, but their families as well.

The resolution expressed condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in the many conflicts and efforts in the campaign to extinguish Saddam Hussein's rule over Iraq.

The bill calls for a remembrance of those who lost their lives or are still missing from Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.

It specifically mentions Navy Capt. Scott Speicher, still missing from the 1991 Gulf War. Further, the bill honors the memory of all Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the War on Terrorism.

The legislation supports the President's efforts and his leadership in the conflict with Iraq. It also commends and thanks British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the British government for their military, and logistical support and other assistance in the efforts in the campaign against Hussein's regime.

The sponsor of the legislation, a Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., explained motivation for the bill saying, "And to the families of our men and women in uniform: I know you are concerned for the safety of your loved ones. The President and Congress are concerned, too. We are doing all we can to ensure your loved ones return home as quickly and safely as possible. America is grateful for your sacrifice."

Locally, both California Senators commented on their reasons for supporting the bill.

In an open letter to service members, and their families Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said, "During these very challenging times, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation and my heartfelt thanks to all of you - the men and women of America's armed forces. You have been called on to make great personal sacrifices to defend our liberties and to protect our citizens - and for this all of America is grateful."

Sen. Barbara Boxer D-Calif., said "I voted in favor of Resolution 95 because I have such love and respect for the young men and women in our Armed Forces. They are brave and courageous. We owe them and their families our full support."
