INTRO: U-S Central Command says it is investigating reports of a so-called "friendly fire" incident in northern Iraq in which three Americans and 12 Kurds reportedly died when a U-S warplane bombed a convoy carrying Kurdish fighters and U-S special forces. V-O-A's Roger Wilkison reports from Central Command forward headquarters in Qatar.

TEXT: Central Command says it lacks specific details of the incident.

A B-B-C correspondent with the convoy, who was himself slightly injured in the attack by what he described as a U-S plane, says he counted between 10 and 12 dead bodies after the incident. He says the younger brother of a top Kurdish leader, Massoud Barzani, was seriously injured in the attack.

General Vince Brooks, Central Command's deputy chief of operations, says the U-S military is investigating the incident.

/// BROOKS ACT ///

As with every other report like this, we will dig into it, find out what the contributing circumstances are, and try to come to some degree of closure on not only what happened, but also if there are some things we need to learn from it, how it happened and what we can do to prevent it from happening again if, indeed, we have some involvement in that.

/// END ACT ///

General Brooks says it will take some time to, in his words, get to the bottom of the incident. (SIGNED)
