
3rd ID battles near Karbala, Najaf
Army News ServiceWASHINGTON (March 31, 2003) -- U.S. forces engaged Iraqi troops south of Baghdad Monday, reportedly capturing a bridge over the Euphrates at Hindiyah, about 12 miles from Karbala.
The 3rd Infantry Division (Mech.) pushed north to within several miles of Karbala Sunday, according to news reports, battling Iraqi soldiers and militiamen along a key road. U.S. forces also pounded the city of Najaf Sunday with artillery and tanks as other troops across Iraq fought to shore up supply routes.
Four 3rd Infantry Division soldiers were killed Saturday by an apparent suicide car bomber at a road checkpoint north of Najaf.
Killed when the car bomb exploded March 29 were:
Pfc. Michael Russell Creighton Weldon, 20, of Conyers, Ga. He was assigned to the 2-7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
Spc. Michael Edward Curtin, 23, of South Plains, N.J. He was assigned to the 2-7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
Pfc. Diego Fernando Rincon, 19, of Conyers, Ga. He was assigned to the 2-7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
Sgt. Eugene Williams, 24, of Highland, N.Y. He was assigned to the 2-7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.
Another 3rd Infantry Division soldier was killed March 28 when a Bradley Fighting Vehicle rolled off a cliff in an accident in Iraq.
Sgt. Roderic A. Solomon , 32, from Fayetteville, N.C., was assigned to the 2-7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, out of Fort Stewart, Ga.
