U.S. Contributes Additional $21 Million for Iraqi Relief
(Funds for four international humanitarian organizations) (440) The United States announced an additional contribution of $21 million to four international humanitarian organizations for relief operations related to the Iraq crisis, according to a Department of State note released on March 29. The organizations are the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Organization for Migration, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. To date, the U.S. has contributed $123 million to international organizations to prepare and respond to the crisis in Iraq. Following is the text of a State Department media note released on March 29: (begin text) Media Note Department of State Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC March 29, 2003 U.S. Contributes Additional $21 Million to International Organizations for Humanitarian Relief Operations Related to Iraq Crisis The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration is pleased to announce an additional contribution of $21 million to four international organizations for their relief operations related to the Iraq crisis. In response to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Flash Appeal issued this month, the U.S. is contributing an additional $6 million. Combined with the $15 million pledged earlier, the U.S. contribution to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for relief operations in Iraq is $21 million. We expect to make additional contributions. To support programs responding to a possible humanitarian emergency in Iraq, as well as neighboring countries, the U.S. is contributing $3 million to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). These funds are intended to support the delivery of relief supplies to refugees and other displaced persons. To assist the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) contingency preparations for a possible humanitarian emergency in Iraq, the U.S. is contributing an additional $2 million. Combined with a previous contribution of $630,000, this brings the total contribution of the State Department to the International Organization for Migration to $2,630,000. USAID has provided an additional $5,950,000 to IOM. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued an Iraq Budget Extension Appeal on March 20, 2003. In response to this appeal, which will cover protection and assistance activities in and around Iraq. The U.S. is responding with an initial contribution of $10 million. To date the U.S. has contributed $123 million to international organizations to prepare and respond to the crisis in Iraq and calls on all other donors to contribute generously to ensure that life-sustaining programs receive the resources they need.
