INTRO: U-S paratroopers have landed in the Kurdish area of northern Iraq, while British military officials say they have foiled an attempt by Iraqi troops to break out of the southern Iraqi city of Basra. Correspondent Scott Bobb reports from coalition headquarters in Qatar.

TEXT: The commander of British troops in the Gulf, Air Marshall Brian Burridge, says British forces struck an Iraqi column seeking to leave the southern city of Basra during the night. He added that two mines were discovered in the waterway leading to the nearby port of Umm Qasr.

/// BURRIDGE ACT ///

Last night, U-K mine hunters discovered and then detonated two mines outside the swept shipping channel.

/// END ACT ///

Marshall Burridge said, as a result, the arrival of coalition ships carrying hundreds of tons of humanitarian aid was being delayed by a day.

The British commander said that coalition forces have extinguished three of the nine oil well fires that were blazing in the oil fields of Faw peninsula. He said the well heads would need refurbishing, but predicted oil exports from these fields could resume within three months. (Signed)
