DATE=03/24/03 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=PENTAGON / IRAQ (S) NUMBER=2-301201 BYLINE=MEREDITH BUEL DATELINE=PENTAGON CONTENT= INTRO: Coalition warplanes continue to pound military targets in Baghdad and in northern Iraq near key oil facilities. Correspondent Meredith Buel has details from the Pentagon. TEXT: Explosions are continuing to rock Baghdad as coalition warplanes targeted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's palace compound. A British military spokesman says warplanes attacked strategic installations such as ammunition dumps, barracks and communications facilities. Coalition aircraft also blasted targets near the northern Iraqi oil center of Kirkuk, following the arrival of more U-S Special Forces soldiers in the area. In some battles, coalition soldiers are now fighting troops from Iraq's elite Republican Guard. Iraq is reporting that two American Apache combat helicopters have been shot down. Iraqi television showed one helicopter still armed with guided missiles near the city of Kerbala, south of Baghdad. Iraq says the crew has been taken prisoner. At the Pentagon officials confirmed that one Apache is missing, but had no information about the crew or a second helicopter.
