INTRO: President Bush is again warning Turkey not to unilaterally send its troops into Kurdish-held northern Iraq. V-O-A's Paula Wolfson has more from the White House.

TEXT: The president says his position is well known in Ankara.

/// BUSH ACT ///

We are making it very clear to the Turks that we expect them not to come in to northern Iraq. We are in constant touch with the Turkish military as well as Turkish politicians. They know our policy.

/// END ACT ///

Mr. Bush says Ankara also knows that the Kurds have been urged not to take any action the might provoke Turkey.

/// BUSH ACT ///

They know we are working with the Kurds to make sure there is not an incident that would cause there to be an excuse to go into northern Iraq.

/// END ACT ///

Kurds living in the region straddling Iraq, Turkey, and Syria have long sought their own state. Turkey fears Kurdish groups in Iraq might take advantage of instability in that country and declare their independence. (SIGNED)
