INTRO: Six uncommitted nations on the U-N Security Council are offering a new compromise resolution that gives Iraq additional time to disarm. But, as V-O-A correspondent Gary Thomas reports from the United Nations, the proposal was quickly rejected by the United States.

TEXT: The six swing votes on the security council Tuesday offered a proposal setting a series of specific disarmament criteria for Iraq to meet. One draft circulating gives Iraq until April 17th to meet those goals. But the proposal, put together by Cameroon, Angola, Chile, Guinea, Mexico, and Pakistan, has found no support in the pro-U-S-camp.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer flatly rejected any such lengthy extension as a "non-starter." Britain also says it will not support any extension beyond the end of this month.

The United States is proposing a resolution incorporating a March 17th ultimatum date for Baghdad to disarm or face invasion.

France and Russia have indicated their readiness to invoke their veto power in the council against any resolution that would authorize military action against Iraq.

A vote on the U-S resolution is expected sometime this week.
