Tracking Inspections in Iraq

RFE/L

7 MARCH 2003

A UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) biological inspection team went to the Al-Aziziyah Airfield and Firing Range to examine shells excavated on 6-7 March. The inspectors took samples of mustard gas from the artillery shells and photographed excavated R-400 bombs and bomb fragments, according to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry. UNMOVIC reported that inspectors took samples from the remainders of the containers that Iraq claimed had been used to transport biological agents.

Six biological inspectors flew to the Mosul Railway Station to question the manager about the station, the Foreign Ministry reported. UNMOVIC stated that the purpose of the inspection was to check the station's maintenance department.

The same inspection team then went to the Ma Bayn Al-Nahrayn State Company for Seeds to ask about the "yellow seed factory," its age, activities, and number of personnel, the Foreign Ministry stated. The team also toured the site. UNMOVIC acknowledged this inspection but did not provide details.

A U-2 plane performed aerial reconnaissance for over five hours, the Foreign Ministry stated.
