COALITION FORCES TARGET IRAQI SURFACE-TO-SURFACE MISSILE SYSTEM

MACDILL AFB, FL -- In response to Iraqi threats to Coalition forces monitoring compliance of United Nations Security Council Resolutions, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH Coalition aircraft used precision-guided weapons today to target elements of Iraqi military surface-to-surface missile systems in southern Iraq.

The system was located near Al Basrah, approximately 245 miles southeast of Baghdad, and was within range of Coalition forces in the area. The strike occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. EST.

Target battle damage assessment is ongoing.

The Coalition executed today's strikes after Iraqi forces moved the missile system into range of Coalition forces in Kuwait. This action by Iraqi forces violated United Nations Security Council Resolution 949, which prohibits the Iraqis from enhancing its military capacity in southern Iraq.

Today's strike was the second strike in two consecutive days against the surface-to-surface missile system that Iraqi forces moved into southern Iraq and which threatened Coalition forces in Kuwait.

Coalition aircraft never target civilian populations or infrastructure and go to painstaking lengths to avoid injury to civilians and damage to civilian facilities.
