India hopes for early improvement in Iraq`s security situation

IRNA

New Delhi, Dec 16, IRNA -- Taking note of the developments in the wake
of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein`s capture, India Monday
evening hoped for an early improvement in security situation in the
war-ravaged country.
India`s Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Navtej Sarna told
reporters in response to questions that "India has taken note of the
developments. We hope for an early improvement in the security
situation in Iraq leading to an early transfer of sovereignty to the
friendly people of Iraq."
Indian Opposition in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament)
Monday asked the Vajpayee Government to come out with a statement in
the Parliament on the arrest of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein
and do its best to see that he was treated "humanely" and faced trial
under UN jurisdiction.
The Government should make a statement on the situation arising
out of the arrest of the former Iraqi ruler, the Opposition asked.
"We must do our best to see he is treated in a proper way," S
Jaipal Reddy of India`s Main Opposition Congress party said while
putting forth his party`s view.
Raising the issue, Dharamraj Singh Patel of Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP) said efforts should be made to see that Hussein was humanely
treated and tried under the jurisdiction of the United Nations.
He said there were already apprehensions that Hussein may be
killed.
Lok Janashakti leader Ram Vilas Paswan said the Prime Minister or
the External Affairs Minister should make the Government stand clear
on the issue. It should not be left to the will of the Americans
alone, he said.
Basudeb Acharia of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said
the Government should take note of these developments while Rajesh
Ranjan of the Independent wanted that the House be taken into
confidence on the issue.
The Speaker of Lok Sabha, Manohar Joshi, said the notice of the
Prime Minister should be drawn to the views expressed by the members.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Bhavana Chikhalia would
convey this as per the Speaker`s direction.
