BOFT SEES HUSSEIN'S CAPTURE AS OPENING TRADE OPPORTUNITIES IN IRAQ

Taipei, Dec. 15 (CNA) The capture of Saddam Hussein has pushed share prices up in most Asian countries, and Taiwan's Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) also sees it as a trade opportunity in reconstruction work, urging local enterprises to grab these opportunities.
BOFT officials said the rise of share prices in most Asian countries Monday represented increasing confidence in investment, suggesting domestic entrepreneurs should make more contacts with Middle East countries that have maintained friendly ties with Taiwan to capitalize on opportunities in reconstruction work in Iraq.
Although Taiwan companies have no right to bid on Iraq's reconstruction work, Taiwanese firms might subcontract work from Iraq's neighboring countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, which are friendly to Taiwan and are expected to win reconstruction contracts in Iraq.
The officials suggested that domestic firms dedicated to the manufacture of construction materials, automobile components and consumer goods can explore as early as possible these trade opportunities.
In addition, the BOFT, under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, originally planned for several trade promotion tours to Iraq after the war was over.
The trade promotion delegation can now go at any time, as the capture of Iraq's deposed leader is expected to bring real peace to Iraq, the officials added.
