IRNA
Baghdad, Dec 14, IRNA -- Acting president of Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) Adnan Pachachi said on Sunday that Saddam should stand trial for the crimes he committed against the Iraqi people. He said at a joint press conference with US Administrator Paul Bremer that a special court will conduct the trial of the Iraqi dictator. He was responding to a question by reporters whether Saddam will be punished for the mass killings during his rule over Iraq. Pachachi said that as per a decision made by the IGC, war criminals will be brought to justice and that Saddam will stand trial. He said that the next government will be independent and the IGC members will form an independent government before June. A reporter asked US commander Ricardo Sanchez about possible attacks against the US troops and whether Saddam will ask his followers to stop sabotage, he said that answers will be available for such questions in future. Asked whether Saddam will be handed over to the IGC, Sanchez said that the matter will be examined in the next few days. A reporters asked both Sanchez and Bremer whether they had contacted Saddam so far or will do so in the future. Sanchez said he made no formal contact with Saddam and it depends on future decision. Bremer said in response, "Let`s put the details of Saddam`s arrest to the future and contact with him." IRNA scooped the news about Saddam`s capture by the Iraqi Governing Council before all international media networks on Sunday. It said in an urgent dispatch from Qasr-e Shirin on Sunday morning, Saddam Hussein, was captured in his hometown of Tikrit quoting the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Jalal Talabani, as saying upon arrival in Iranian territory to head for France. 215/AH/210 End
