UK denies visa for top Iraqi nuclear scientist
IRNA
London, Dec 12, IRNA - The British government is refusing to say why it has refused a visa to former Iraqi top nuclear scientist, Jafar Dhia Jafar, to attend a meeting at the Royal Society, the UK`s independent scientific academy. "I am withholding the information requested under exemption 5 of Part 2 of the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information," Foreign Office Minister Chris Mullin told MPs on Thursday. Jafar, who obtained his PhD in nuclear science at the University of Birmingham in central England, was the former head of Iraq`s Nuclear Research Center. Mullin was asked in a written parliamentary question from Liberal Democrat MP Mike Hancock what were the reasons why the scientist was being refused to attend the meeting. In response, he said that it was "not our practice to disclose details of the individual entry clearance cases in a public forum" but added that he would write to the MP with regard to the matter.
