IRNA
London, Dec 10, IRNA -- Chancellor of Exchequer Gordon Brown announced Wednesday that he was earmarking an additional pnds 800 million (dlrs 1.4 billion) for the on-going military operation in Iraq. Of the extra funding, pnds 500 million will be available in the current financial year ending March 2004 and pnds 300 million for the following year. The additional money comes on top of the three billion pounds already allocated to the armed forces for the campaign to overthrow Saddam Hussein`s regime and rebuild Iraq`s infrastructure. In his pre-budget speech to parliament, Brown revealed that the extra funds will bring government spending on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to pnds 6.3 bn. A sum of two billion pounds was also being transferred to next years contingency fund for extra Iraq costs. He pledged that any necessary resources would be made available for the wider war on terrorism and in international development, saying that Britain would also meet all its international obligations in Iraq and in the war on poverty in Africa and elsewhere.
