Rafsanjani condemns US crimes, sacrilege to holy places in Iraq

Tehran, Dec 2, IRNA -- Member of Iraq`s Governing Council Ahmad Chalabi here on Tuesday conferred with the Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on recent developments in Iraq. At the meeting, Rafsanjani condemned the new wave of US crimes and atrocities in Samarra as well as their sacrilege to holy places in the city. Saddam and Baath party were considered the two principal obstacles for regional developments, he said. Highlighting regional developments, he termed the present situation as an opportunity and said that the fall of Saddam is considered as a historical event for the whole region and it is expected that all political groups will help bolster and consolidate the pillars of independence and freedom in Iraq in a bid to achieve regional and global goals. During the eight-year of sacred defense, both the Iranian nation and Iraqi people suffered a lot due to inhuman and savage atrocities of the Saddam regime, he said. Highlighting Iraq`s sensitive situation, he said it would be an irreparable loss for both Iraq and the region if the majority in Iraq is ignored. "To save the country, the legitimate rights of all ethnic and political groups should be taken into account by conducting free elections in the country," he said. The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to share its experiences to help reconstruct Iraq, he said adding that Iran will not intervene in Iraq`s domestic affairs and will not hesitate to help the Iraqi people. Chalabi, for his part, called the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq as two economic powers which enjoy a very special politico-geographical status in the region and said the two countries through deepening mutual ties can turn to a political center to exert influence on the region and the world. Describing the Islamic Revolution as an significant historical event, he said the experienced gained by the Islamic revolution should be the basis of an exemplary and suitable model for other Muslim nations. The US has no alternative but to yield to the will of Iraqi nation and let them administer their own fate, he said. Lauding Iran`s humanitarian aid for Iraq, he called for serious cooperation of the country in Iraq`s reconstruction process. MM/AH/210 End
