Russia welcomes UN decision to set up group on Iraq
IRNA
Moscow, Nov 29, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Moscow welcomes the UN secretary general`s decision to set up a group of seven and five and five on Iraq, the Russian Foreign Ministry`s statement said. Iraq`s neighbors and Egypt and five permanent and five non-permanent members of the UN Security Council are invited to the group. Its first meeting is planned for December 1. Such a mechanism can help to finally return the Iraq settlement to the international law field and prepare appropriate recommendations, including on transfer of powers to Iraqis, the document said. The Russian Foreign Ministry views as the most important task determining optimum forms for the United Nations to join the political settlement in Iraq. Russia believes it could play an important role in implementation of the proposal to call an Iraqi conference under the UN aegis with a considerable circle of foreign participants for the purpose of working out agreements on the political process and forming an authoritative interim government, and finally completing restoration of Iraq`s sovereignty, the document noted. /AH/210 End
