UN: Russia Proposes Conference On Iraq

Moscow, 19 November 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Russia is suggesting that the United Nations convene a conference to draft a peace plan for Iraq providing for international peacekeepers.

The Russian Foreign Ministry today issued the text of an interview on U.S.-based CNN television in which Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov unveiled the proposal.

Ivanov said the conference could draft a plan that then would be submitted to the UN Security Council.

Russia consistently has opposed the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. And it has continuously argued for a strong UN role in Iraq's reconstruction.
