Germany stresses again demand for speedy Iraqi power transfer
IRNA
Berlin, Nov 14, IRNA -- The German government Friday reiterated the need for a speedy transfer of political power to the Iraqi people and a greater United Nations role in Iraq`s post-war reconstruction process. "We have always stressed that reconstruction and democratization is a matter for the Iraqis themselves which means speedy transfer of Iraqi sovereignty is an important step. Further we have emphasized the important role of the UN," German Foreign Ministry spokesman Walter Lindner said during a news conference. He underscored Berlin`s "positive and constructive stance in helping map out Iraq`s post-war order". Germany has repeatedly demanded a central political role of the UN in Iraq`s rebuilding process as well as a clear timetable for the transfer of power from the American occupiers to the Iraqi people. The US has been reluctant to give the UN more than a minimal authority in Iraq`s post-war reconstruction process. OT/216 End
